More dark and mysterious stuff - this time in the co-op car park in Aspatria. A passing customer added the extra element that i though my shot of Maryport was missing last week.
Why have I never investigated black and white before?

1000/738: 27 Feb 2012: Co-op Car Park
1000/737: 26 Feb 2012: Clan Gathering
Bit of a family gathering today to celebrate Ashley's 22nd - obviously we have shares in Renault. Am hopeful that we'll get a top coat on the drive in the morning - depends a bit on the weather I think.
1000/736: 25 Feb 2012: The Holdings
The angle of this shot gives you a clue as to the drinkability of this rather chewy red. Quite a fan of Malbec.
1000/735: 24 Feb 2012: Rose
Marion got this for Christmas from her pen-friend in Hamburg - a long-term , long distance friendship if ever there was one. She first went to visit Petra about 2 weeks after our first date in 1976 and they've been in touch ever since!
The rose is preserved in some cunning way so it still looks and feels fresh.
1000/734: 23 Feb 2012: Ash Bucket
It's a bucket - what more can I say. Thought it was going to be more interesting than it actually turned out.
1000/733: 22 Feb 2012: Tinnies
A bit of catching up to do with my blog posts - for one reason and another I've not got around to them for a week. This was a rather drab shot of some beer cans which I've brightened up in Lightroom - but the truth is it's still just a bunch of cans - some days art just doesn't happen.

1000/732: 21 Feb 2012: Not sure what title to give this
This one was taken in the gardens of the Tortworth Court. I was attracted by the colours and shapes - no more, no less.
1000/731: 20 Feb 2012: Just waiting for a top coat
Fairly typically the good ol' Cumbrian weather intervened before the guys could get the final coat of tarmac on - but it's looking good so far. Just need to find some way of ensuring that the low flying Jaguars don't assume it's a runway!
The guys on the team did say it would look big once the tarmac was down - and they weren't kidding.
1000/730: 19 Feb 2012: Two years of photo-a-day
Nearly forgot today - which would have been a shame - as by my calculation I've just hit the two year mark. Couldn't think of anything inspirational so went for the calendar with today's date.
1000/729: 18 Feb 2012: Eating Out
Very pleasant meal out with the family this evening at the Joliffe Arms in Kilmersdon (near Radstock). Steak was one of the best I've eaten and let's not mention the turkish delight cheesecake - OK let's - it was rich creamy and delicious.

1000/728: 17 Feb 2012: Drain
Was attracted by the way the light was reflecting from this drain cover. Am beginning to understand the attraction of black and white photography - this is simply dull in colour.
1000/727: 16 Feb 2012: Midsomer No Murders
Taken by the simple expedient of putting the camera on the floor. Shot in Midsomer Norton - in spite of the Flickr map claiming it's in Radstock.

1000/726: 15 Feb 2012: Making progress
With the back pretty much ready to take the tarmac - once the manhole covers have been reset - it's on with ripping up the front. Should be fairly straightforward as it's mostly potholes anyhow. More lawn aligning to do here as well to remove an awkward kink in the drive.
1000/725: 14 Feb 2012: A new sub-base
Pretty much the same view as yesterday - only with added digger. Nice new sub-base in place - if not yet compacted - and the lawn neatly trimmed.
1000/724: 13 Feb 2012: Clearing the ground
We're having our driveway resurfaced - replaced is probably more accurate. This is the view from the back window after the old concrete has been ripped up. Plan is to square of the sticky-out bit of lawn so we don't stand on the mud getting out of the car, get all the edges tidied up, improve the drainage and lay the lot to shiny new tarmac.

1000/723: 12 Feb 2012: Allonby has looked better
Went out to collect some more shots for my next assignment today. Weather less than attractive for this, but I can't sit around waiting for summer. This one taken from the car park at the north end of the village.
1000/722: 11 Feb 2012: Maryport Harbour at night
Another in my growing night shots collection. Think this one really needs someone stood under one of the lights - or perhaps lying sprawled in one of the pools of light.
1000/721: 10 Feb 2012: Prison Camp?
Actually not - it's shot up the telegraph pole outside of my house. I can only assume that shinning up tar covered poles is an issue is this tiny corner of our village, as no other pole in the area is similarly defended.
1000/720: 09 Feb 2012: Batgirl
Youngest daughter dressed as Batgirl for a fancy dress party this evening.. Not sure this photo really does her justice.

1000/719: 08 Feb 2012: Mixed Lighting
The opposite approach to yesterday's Roman soldier - lots of colour from all the different light sources and plenty of detail dotted around.
1000/718: 07 Feb 2012: Portrait of a Roman Soldier
This guy seems to spend his time standing in a corner behind the church at Stretton. he's quite obliging - stands still for as long as I need to get a portrait in any conditions. Another experiment in how little light and detail you need to make an effective photo.
1000/717: 06 Feb 2012: Church Tower at Night
I've often wondered how little light you really need for an effective photo - and on the basis of this one I guess the answer is not much. The only light on the face of the church is from the hotel lights across the road - it was almost too dark to focus manually - leave alone automatically.
I've seen this setting on the camera described as 'unusable' in a review. Guess it depends on what you're hoping to achieve.
1000/716: 05 Feb 2012: Diagonals
This feels like a bit of a soul mate for yesterday's shot. I'm really enjoying the way that black and white lets me think about the patterns I'm looking at.

1000/715: 04 Feb 2012: Sea Wall, Silloth
Silloth sea wall is a fascinating bit of engineering - all angles and steps with no apparent plan. Makes a good semi-abstract photo though.

1000/714: 03 Feb 2012: Der Abend (inspired by Ralph Gibson)
Have been interested in Ralph Gibson ever since one of the tutors (thanks Clive) threw his name 'casually' into a conversation. I enjoy the high contrast, graphic nature of his images and the way he plays with space and form.
Anyway - to cut a long story short - I was having a good look around his website this evening and came across a shot in Die Nacht which I liked so much I thought I'd have a stab at my own take.
1000/713: 02 Feb 2012: The Seat

1000/712: 01 Feb 2012: Moonlight over Allerby
On the prowl for more night shots - this time featuring moonlight rather than streetlights. Got this one by using a an old sandstone gatepost to steady the camera for a 10 second exposure. I really should carry a tripod.

1000/711: 31 Jan 2012: The Fence
Thought this fence would make a nice graphic composition. It was a 10 second exposure which I kept sharp by clutching the camera as hard as I could against one of the metal uprights - necessity is the mother of invention and all that.
1000/710: 30 Jan 2012: Cat and Lion, Stretton
Couldn't get into my usual haunt today so stayed here instead. There's a Premier Inn attached around the back - perfectly adequate and an easy walk to join my colleagues - and I saved the business a few pounds into the bargain, so I feel virtuous as well.
